Athletic Mindfulness Program

Mindfulness + Soccer=Winning Combination

The Mindfully Well Center and the Wright State University Men's Soccer Team are pleased to announce a winning partnership.

The WSU Raiders made it to the final game of the 2016 Horizon League Soccer Tournament, narrowly missing the championship title with a 1-0 loss to the Univiersity of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) Flames.

But their success throughout the season according to Soccer Coach Bryan Davis, is in part due to the Athletic Mindfulness Program developed and conducted by Dr. Rose Mary Shaw here at the The Mindfully Well Center.

The program, which has been in place for the past two years, consists of weekly Mindfulness training and sports-oriented yoga. Coach Davis says team members experienced positive benefits such increased flexibly, motivation, and concentration, along with fewer injuries.

Dr. Shaw, who conducted the training along with yoga instructors Philip Boettlier, Gail Lichtenfels, and yoga intern, Madeline Hill, explains that mindfulness involves paying attention in a particular way, and without judgement.

“This way of being”, she observes, “can help those who practice it develop greater awareness, clarity, and acceptance of the present moment.” Other benefits, she notes, include increased emotional well being, and decreased sensitivity to pain.

Shaw says she is looking forward to continuing training the Wright State Men’s Soccer team."They are a great group of motivated men with indomitable spirits and dedication to both self improvement and team success."
